Descrizione del progetto
ECO-HERITAGE aims to enhance the role of cultural heritage in combination with green spaces as enablers and drivers of climate change mitigation and sustainable development in urban and peri-urban areas. Four different case-studies of urban sprawl areas in four different legal systems (France,Spain, Portugal, and Italy) will be object of a comparative inquiry.
A qualitative analysis will be provided by legal scholars to sketch out legal differences in the management models adopted in the four European countries. In parallel, the project will conduct an empirical and quantitative investigation using data collected and analysed by geographers and environmental and landscape scientists on the same case-study areas.
Moving from the idea that regulations and policies must properly fit with specific environmental and urban characteristics of the urban sprawl area considered, the research will demonstrate that specific climatic data, biodiversity characteristics of greenery and features of existing cultural heritage must be considered in drafting legal solutions of integrated management for the urban sprawl areas.
Based on a bottom-up approach, a systemic connection between the need to enhance existing cultural assets and the climate change mitigation role that greenery is known to provide in densely industrialised and populated urban sprawl areas can be created. Therefore, the research intends to elaborate a new general set of policies and a new specific contractual model of integrated management of cultural heritage with greenery for the pivotal case of the urban sprawl area of La Mandria.
